SRP Battery Incentive Program
Inergy Systems played a pivotal role in supporting Salt River Project’s (SRP) Battery Incentive Program, which aimed to explore the use of residential battery energy storage systems (BESS) as distributed energy resources (DER) in customer homes. This large-scale program, conducted in collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), was one of the most extensive energy storage studies to date, involving up to 4,500 customers in central Arizona.
Program Aims and Scope
The SRP Battery Incentive Program was designed to evaluate the benefits and impacts of residential battery systems for both customers and utilities. Through this program, SRP provided financial incentives to qualified customers to install battery energy storage systems in their homes. NREL worked alongside SRP to analyze the performance and benefits of battery energy storage technologies, using real-world data to develop models that would inform future energy storage adoption strategies.
The program aimed to achieve several key objectives:
- Assess the economic and operational impacts of residential battery systems.
- Develop high-fidelity models to evaluate how battery energy storage systems interact with other distributed energy resources (DER) like solar energy.
- Gather data on battery performance, particularly in warm climates like central Arizona.
- Provide insights that would assist SRP and other utilities in better understanding the potential of residential battery systems to improve grid stability and reduce energy costs for customers.
Inergy’s Role in the Program
Inergy Systems was a key partner in the SRP Battery Incentive Program, responsible for providing the technology and services that enabled data collection and system management for the project. Inergy’s contributions to the program included:
- Data Collection & Management: Inergy provided hardware and services to measure, collect, store, and transmit battery, inverter, and temperature data from residential homes. This data was securely transmitted to NREL for further analysis.
- Installation & Support: Inergy assisted with the installation of battery systems in participant homes and provided post-installation support to ensure smooth operation and ongoing performance.
- Provisioning & Visualization Tools: Inergy developed provisioning, data management, and visualization tools to simplify system management and provide detailed insights into system performance.
- Expanded Capabilities: Inergy expanded its existing systems to support solar and battery power inverters, adding temperature sensing and AC measurement capabilities to reduce installation complexity and improve data accuracy.
- System Testing & Demonstration: Inergy also conducted system tests and demonstrations to validate the capabilities of its energy management technologies in real-world environments.
Program Outcomes
The SRP Battery Incentive Program, now completed, provided invaluable insights into how residential battery systems perform in real-world settings. The program helped identify how battery energy storage systems (BESS) could improve energy resilience, reduce costs for homeowners, and support utilities in managing distributed energy resources more effectively. The data collected by Inergy and analyzed by NREL helped refine models that will inform the future of battery energy storage systems and distributed energy resources in the utility sector.
By participating in this program, Inergy Systems helped SRP and NREL move one step closer to realizing the full potential of residential battery storage systems in reducing energy costs and improving grid stability for both utilities and consumers.
